Factory ECU remapping and custom chip tuning for Land Rover diesel and petrol engines. Significant power and torque gains.
ECU remapping — also called chip tuning or ECU programming — is the most effective single modification available for a diesel Land Rover. By rewriting the fuel delivery, boost pressure, and injection timing parameters within the engine control unit, Davis Performance Landys unlocks power and torque that the factory deliberately left on the table. On a Defender TD5, a remap takes output from 90 kW and 300 Nm to approximately 145 kW and 430 Nm. That is a 61% power increase with no mechanical changes to the engine.
Land Rover calibrates ECU maps conservatively, for two reasons: to accommodate the wide variation in fuel quality across global markets, and to leave headroom for product differentiation across model grades. A Defender TD5 in Australia runs the same mechanical hardware as the higher-output versions sold in European markets — the difference is entirely in the software. We write maps specifically for Australian conditions, taking into account local diesel quality, ambient temperatures, and the demands of outback touring or heavy towing rather than European motorway driving.
Not every customer wants maximum power. For Land Rovers used for long-distance touring or high-mileage work, we offer economy-focused maps that improve fuel burn at highway speeds without compromising reliability. Some owners see 10–15% reductions in fuel consumption, which on a Defender or Discovery covering 30,000 km per year represents a material saving.
All remaps are verified on our in-house dynamometer, giving you before-and-after figures rather than a claims sheet. You leave with data, not assumptions.

A standard Defender TD5 produces 90 kW and 300 Nm from the factory. After an ECU remap on stock hardware, we achieve approximately 145 kW and 430 Nm — an increase of around 61% power and 43% torque. These figures are verified on our in-house dyno before and after the remap.
On vehicles still under a manufacturer's warranty, a remap may affect warranty coverage for drivetrain components. However, the vast majority of Land Rovers we remap are out of the original warranty period. We can advise on your specific situation. Many customers choose to have a remap performed after warranty expiry, and there is no ongoing obligation or tracking — the map is written into the ECU and the vehicle behaves as a standard unit to any diagnostic tool.
It depends on how you drive. Maximum power maps increase fuel consumption when driven hard. Economy maps, which we also offer, can reduce fuel consumption by 10–15% at highway cruising speeds by optimising injection timing for efficiency rather than performance. Most performance-mapped vehicles see similar fuel economy to standard if driven the same way — the extra power is available when needed but not always used.
Yes. The Discovery 3 and 4 TDV6 (2.7L) engine responds very well to remapping. Standard output is around 140 kW and 440 Nm. After remapping we typically achieve 180–185 kW and approximately 540 Nm. This makes a significant difference to towing capacity and highway overtaking — areas where the standard Discovery 3 TDV6 can feel laboured.
On older Land Rovers (200TDI, 300TDI), performance tuning was done via physical chips added to the injection pump — these are "chip tunes." On TD5 and later models with electronic ECUs, the software is rewritten directly using specialist flash tools — this is a "remap." The term "chip tuning" is still used colloquially for both. We can advise which method applies to your specific model.
For outback touring, the main benefit of a remap is improved mid-range torque — the kind of power you use overtaking road trains, climbing long grades, or recovering from soft ground. The improvement in low-to-mid-range pull is the most noticeable real-world change. It also reduces how hard the engine has to work at highway speeds, which can contribute to reliability on extended trips.
Yes. The Defender 2.4 Puma (built 2007–2011) ECU is remapped via OBD connection. The standard output is 90 kW and 360 Nm. After remapping, expect approximately 120–125 kW and 450 Nm. The Puma engine responds well to remapping and is considered a reliable platform for tuning.
The remap process itself takes approximately 2–3 hours, including pre-remap dyno run, the software write, and post-remap dyno verification. We allow a full half-day booking per vehicle. Some models with more complex ECU systems may take longer — we will advise at time of booking.
